AIM:ENGLISH FRAMEWORK

At AIM Federation, we believe that a strong foundation in reading and writing is key to every child’s success. Our English curriculum is designed to build fluency, comprehension and creativity. Through rich, engaging texts, we inspire a love of reading while equipping children with the skills to express themselves clearly through writing. From early phonics development to mastering more complex writing techniques, our approach ensures that each child can confidently progress on their literacy journey.

Inspiring readers and writers of tomorrow.

READING

Our reading curriculum is built on the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme, providing a systematic and progressive approach to phonics and fluency. From the earliest stages, children learn to decode words confidently through daily phonics lessons and practice with engaging, decodable texts. As children progress, fluency lessons ensure they read with speed, accuracy and expression, building comprehension alongside reading skills. We use a wide variety of high-quality fiction and non-fiction texts to instil a love of reading and develop a deeper understanding of language and the world around them.

Alongside fluency, we place a strong emphasis on reading comprehension. Children are taught strategies to understand and interpret texts, such as predicting, questioning, and making connections. They learn to summarise key ideas, identify themes, and infer meaning from what they read. This not only deepens their understanding but also helps them to develop critical thinking skills. By engaging in discussions about texts, children explore diverse perspectives and learn how to articulate their ideas clearly. Together, these skills provide a solid foundation for lifelong reading success.

WRITING

Our reading curriculum plays a vital role in inspiring children to become confident writers. By engaging with a variety of high-quality texts, children are introduced to different writing structures, genres, and styles. These reading experiences provide rich models for their own writing, helping them to understand how to organise their ideas, develop characters, and use effective language. Through reading, children also expand their vocabulary and comprehension, which enhances their ability to express themselves clearly in writing.

Our writing curriculum complements reading by teaching children to apply their phonics knowledge in creative and purposeful ways. Writing lessons focus on building skills in composition, handwriting, grammar, and vocabulary development, ensuring children can express themselves effectively. Spelling is taught systematically, progressing from phonics-based rules to more complex patterns, suffixes, and common exception words. Through this integrated approach, children develop the confidence to write fluently and accurately, while fostering creativity and laying a strong foundation for future learning.
